URGENT: BYRAM TOWNSHIP SET TO LOSE $279,731 in STATE AID
As part of Governor Corzine’s proposed 2008-2009 New Jersey State budget, he plans to eliminate base municipal state aid to towns with a populations under 5,000 and reduce aid to towns with populations between 5,000 and 10,000 by 50%. Byram Township is losing $279,731 in state aid revenues. This will have a major impact on the tax payers of Byram that will force the Township to reduce or eliminate services, increase the tax burden on its residents and increase its reliance on surplus to balance the budget. The Byram Township Council is urging the Governor and the Legislature to reconsider the drastic cuts in aid to small municipalities and to take affirmative action to restore funding. The Byram Township Council unanimously passed a resolution at the March 3 council meeting that objects to the failure of the 2008-2009 State budget to treat property tax relief as a priority. It is very important for the public and residents of Byram to be heard on this issue. Governor Corzine and the Legislature must agree to a State budget plan by July 1, so nothing is yet finalized. The State Budget and Appropriations Committee and the Assembly Budget Committee are conducting public hearings.
