Byram Township Announces Participation in NJDEP’s Radon Awareness Program 2018

The Byram Township Health Department announced today that it will participate with the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) Radon Section in a special radon awareness program to promote testing for radon in homes. Radon is a radioactive gas that occurs naturally when uranium and radium break down in the soil and rock formations. Radon gas moves up through the soil and finds its way into the homes through cracks in the foundation and openings around pumps, pipes and drains. Testing is the only way to know if you and your family are at risk from radon.  Radon testing is easy, and problems can be mitigated.

Free radon test kits are currently available to Byram Township homeowners, on a first come, first served basis. The free radon kits and educational material are available at the Municipal Building Health Department, 10 Mansfield Drive, Monday - Friday between the hours of 11:30 am-4:30 pm.  Residents are urged to act promptly as quantities are limited.

For more information on radon, contact the NJDEP Radon Section at (800) 648-0294.  The following websites provide additional resources: www.njradon.org and http://www.epa.gov/radon/.
