Garbage & Recycling Announcement - 07/15/2019

Announcing the availability of Recycle Coach!   Use this link (or download the app) to:

  • - Set an email reminder of the trash and recycling collection days or special Township disposal days
  • - Export trash and recycling dates to your personal calendar
  • - "Ask" Recycle Coach to determine how to dispose of specific items by using the What Goes Where Tool
  • - Report trash or recycling related issues (example a missed pickup)
  • - Learn more about recycling in general


The Leaf & Brush Area at Township Recycling Center is now open during daylight hours, 7 days a week for residential use only (NO contractors).  Leaves can be disposed of in biodegradable paper bags or loose; leaves in plastic bags will NOT be accepted.  Residents may also bring leaves in biodegradable paper bags to the Sussex County Municipal Utilities Authority (SCMUA) for disposal.  Byram Township does not accept grass clippings at the Township Recycling Center.  Please bring grass clippings to SCMUA and note that they charge disposal fees to accept these materials.  Please contact SCMUA at 973-579-6998 for additional questions.


CURBSIDE LEAF PICK-UP will occur on Monday, December 6th.   Residents must place their leaves in biodegradable paper bags and place them curbside by 6amBlue Diamond will pick up the bags on Monday only.  There is no limit to the number of bags that will be picked up.
If a resident misses the pick-up, residents may bring their leaves to the Township Recycling Center (located at 10 Mansfield Drive) during daylight hours, weather dependent.   Please note that the Leaf & Brush area closes for winter months.  For 2021, the tentative closure date of this area is December 18th, weather dependent.   The leaves may be either loose or in biodegradable paper bags; leaves in plastic bags will not be accepted.  In addition, leaves brought by contractors will not be accepted.  Residents may also elect to bring their leaves to the Sussex County Utilities Municipal Authority (SCMUA) for disposal.  Please note there is a fee to do this.  Please contact 973-579-6998 or visit their website at

Items that are not on the list of accepted items for curbside pick-up or that can be brought to the Recycling Center can be brought to the Sussex County Municipal Utilities Authority in Lafayette (SCMUA) on Mon. to Sat. between 7am to 2pm; however, please call them to confirm their hours operation.  Please note that SCMUA will charge a disposal fee.  However, on designated days there will be free disposal of certain items such as e-waste and hazardous wastes.   For additional information, SCMUA's phone number is 973-579-6998, or click here for their website. 

E-Waste - includes computers, printers, television, stereo equipment and other electronic media.   SCMUA designated the following days for Free E-Waste Drop-Off Days in 2021:  3/27, 5/22, 7/24 and 10/23.   Click here for SCMUA's information on this free event.

Byram Township support NJ's Clean Communities Program.   Each year, several community volunteer groups participate in clean-ups and results are reported to NJ.   As a result of these efforts, the Township receives funds which are applied to recycling initiatives.
